There are two types of games in the world: perfect information games and partial information games. The first type is when all opponents have access to exactly the same information set to make decisions. Think about chess if you need an example. The second type of game, partial information, relies on the opponents intentionally withholding information from each other. This is the type of game that poker falls under. The whole point of the game is to surprise your opponent with a well formed hand or a brilliant play.
Given that poker relies on hidden information in its guise as a partial information game, I am always startled when players accidently give away information. There is no reason to give your opponent a single bit of unnecessary information. That means that you should never mention your hand while playing live poker, make comments about it in the chat box in online poker, or comment on other people’s hands. You need to keep all of your information personal. Otherwise, you will unfairly skew the game and allow your opponents’ to gain an advantage. Do you really want to be an instrument in your own loss? I think not, so keep poker a partial information game. Your bank account will thank you.
