Gestational Diabetes

During Pregnancy, one of the most important tests that can be taken is the blood glucose test for gestational diabetes. There are actually quite a few women who develop this condition and the consequences can be quite high. Diabetes can cause some crazy problems for the unborn fetus and must be under control. If the diabetes is not controlled and monitored then you have a greater risk of having a baby with birth defects of the vital organs such as an abnormal heart, lungs, spinal cord, and the kidneys. The risk of stillbirth and miscarriage also increases drastically. Also, if the diabetes is not controlled you have the risk of having an oversized baby. Babies over 10 pounds happen when the blood sugars gets too high and the baby will receive a higher than normal glucose load. High birth weight babies are at risk for a whole lot of health problems and also can be dangerous for the mom to deliver. Pregnant women must make sure to eat a healthy diet, takes her prenatal and gets some exercise, and the baby and mom should be fine and avoid all of the possible side effects from gestational diabetes. It is critical to keep the moms blood sugar levels in control and not to fluctuate from high to low on an ongoing basis.
