Court Imposes Penalty on PC Harrington for Stadium Accident

PC Harrington Contractors Ltd, a London based construction firm was fined £150,000 as penalty and charged £25,203 towards costs incurred, after an employee was killed during a construction activity at the Wembley Stadium.

The incident took place on 15 January 2004, when Patrick O’ Sullivan lost his life and a co-worker was seriously injured, when a platform broke loose during a crane based lifting operation and fell on them. They were working on the construction of the superstructure of the stadium.

Following reports of the accident, Giles Meredith, HSE Inspector said that the Wembley Stadium construction site routinely witnessed the carrying out of many crane based operations and these were both risky and accident prone activities. Even more so, he added, when one is engaged in a lifting operation the risks are even bigger and hence the precautions should be more too. A course in the management of health and safety (click on NEBOSH training) could help you cut the risks that apply in your workplace.

The HSE reached out to the family of Patrick O’ Sullivan and offered their commiserations on the premature death of their family member.

The Health and Safety Executive also handed out words of caution to workers and employers engaged at construction sites to maintain a safe and secure working environment and reduce the health and safety risks that are associated with lifting assignments.
