Gestational Diabetes

During Pregnancy, one of the most important tests that can be taken is the blood glucose test for gestational diabetes. There are actually quite a few women who develop this condition and the consequences can be quite high. Diabetes can cause some crazy problems for the unborn fetus and must be under control. If the diabetes is not controlled and monitored then you have a greater risk of having a baby with birth defects of the vital organs such as an abnormal heart, lungs, spinal cord, and the kidneys. The risk of stillbirth and miscarriage also increases drastically. Also, if the diabetes is not controlled you have the risk of having an oversized baby. Babies over 10 pounds happen when the blood sugars gets too high and the baby will receive a higher than normal glucose load. High birth weight babies are at risk for a whole lot of health problems and also can be dangerous for the mom to deliver. Pregnant women must make sure to eat a healthy diet, takes her prenatal and gets some exercise, and the baby and mom should be fine and avoid all of the possible side effects from gestational diabetes. It is critical to keep the moms blood sugar levels in control and not to fluctuate from high to low on an ongoing basis.

The Unexplained

The Unexplained
By

Life if full of unexplained things. It makes you wonder how so many things can be a mystery? Are we just not intelligent enough as a race to understand everything, or is it that we just haven’t had enough time to discern the meaning of these things. The mysteries I am talking about exist in nature and are also man made. There is also a class of mystery that to many seems neither. Some people think that science will discover the truths behind all mysteries but a lot of times while solving one mystery another is discovered.

Studying nature we realize that we can’t explain how life really starts. If we believe in God, then we say that God created all life. I myself believe that. One of the facts that I base it on is our DNA. We have been programmed, somewhat like a computer. But not everyone believes this, or that there even is a God. But, for the sake of argument bear with me and just for this moment, even if you don’t believe, just make believe that it is true. That would make the next question, how did He do it? This is a question that we just can’t answer. We may be able to answer this some day or we may not. Will we find clues some day that will allow us to conduct experiments in the area of life creation? Maybe Dr. Frankenstein was just a little ahead of his time. Some members of the religious community would be appalled at the prospect of developing life in the lab. I can see it now, the mobs with the torches yelling “burn the Godless creature.” But the truth is that even if we don’t create animal life in the future, we might just create machine life in the near future. The problem with machine life, is that it might be impossible to tell if a machine is really thinking for itself or it is just its program making you think that it is self aware.

Nature also enjoys puzzling us with its structure. We have strange things like Quasars pinging away out in space. We think that there is matter out there that we can’t see, called dark matter, and this matter would be necessary to balance the equations that explain the universe. Oh we are such poor creatures at times. We think that we can explain everything, then we find out that certain things we believed are completely wrong or that something has appeared that violated the very laws that we postulated. This happened just a little while ago when we discovered that one of the very furthermost galaxies that was discovered turned out to be an old galaxy. This is impossible, or at least we think so, because the further out we look, the longer it takes light to reach us. We should have seen a galaxy that was no older than about 470 million years because according to scientists, that is the age of the universe back at that point in time. Something is certainly wrong here. Either the universe is much older than we think, remnants are out there from previous expansions of the universe or the galaxy we are looking at only seems to be old or is not as far as we think. We have not even figured out the simplest things on the cosmic scale and that is the conditions necessary for life. We thought we knew them, then we found those life forms on our own planet that live deep in the ocean by hot water vents that spew out water so hot that it would boil us, but they swim and feed there happily. Is this only the tip of the iceberg, can life exist almost anywhere and maybe even without oxygen? What about those bacteria that live inside rocks for millions of years?

Yeah mysteries are all around us. I have a good one for you, how do you cure the common cold? People have been trying to do this for a thousand years and even with all our technology and medical know how we still haven’t been able to do it, let alone cure cancer. But this brings me to another area of medicine and that is producing drugs. Have you ever wondered if there were cures out there for certain diseases but maybe they were being kept secret? You may wonder why I would say such a terrible thing? The answer is economics. You can make a heck of a lot more money keeping a disease around and selling pills that have to be taken every day to keep it in check than if you put out a cure that is only used once. I have been accused of being too suspicious, but how can I help it when I see people paying many dollars a pill for drugs that are the same as the farmers are using on pigs and paying only 30 cents each. How can I help it when drug companies try and stop people in this country from purchasing drugs from Canada at a cheaper price. How can I help it when drug companies lobby and push through medicare reform that only benefits them with higher drug prices.

Man has created things that can’t be adequately explained. He uses electricity, yet no one can completely explain what it is. He built buildings in South America on top of mountains using huge boulders that were not from the area. How did he get them to the top of the mountains thousands of years ago when we would be hard pressed to do this even today? How was the Great Pyramid constructed so perfectly with the measurements so precise by people barely out of the stone age? There are so many of these wonders around the world and yet present day modern man can not conceive of how they could have been built. It seems that man has been using electricity for over thousands of years. No this isn’t a mistake, primitive batteries have been found that date back to ancient Babylon. Not only do we not completely understand many aspects of science but we seem not to completely know our own history. There are things around that are ancient, yet we know nothing of their origins. One has to look no further than the navigational mechanical computer that was discovered on a ancient Greek ship wreck that was over 2,000 years old. Until this discovery we never even suspected that metal gears were invented yet.

Our society has become one of great secrecy. There may be information that is not militarily dangerous to possess, yet it is known only to a privileged few. Do you remember when the Cydonia region on Mars was first photographed? This is the area that contains the famous Mars face, Pyramid and other areas know as the ruins. Why haven’t we gotten better photos of this area? We did get one of the face that showed it as a worn plateau but when the photo was examined it showed that over 80% of the information that makes up a photo was missing. When we are told that Mars probes are missing or that the Mars explorer isn’t sending back photos, is that really the truth or are these devices really taking photos of areas that the government doesn’t want us to see? This would be a great way to photograph Cydonia in detail without us knowing about it. Was there past life on Mars, are we all descendants of Martians or is there life there now? Here is the most important question, if there was life on Mars would the government ever let us know? I for one am tired of hearing the excuse that we couldn’t handle it and it would throw our religious organizations into chaos.

UFOs have been showing up in the news for hundreds of years. They were seen before the dawn of flight. They flew over the White House in the 1950s scaring the heck out of everyone. Presidents have seen them, airline pilots have seen them and many of our astronauts admit to seeing them. There is even evidence pointing to the fact that they may have a base of the dark side of the moon. Even if they don’t exist and are some sort of secret Earth craft, you have to admit the excuses to deny their existence can get pretty lame. No wonder people don’t believe the Air Force when they claim that police are looking at swamp gas. “That is not a metallic craft with lights and window you are seeing, it is a temperature inversion”, oh give me a break. So here we have more unexplained objects.

I guess all we can hope for is that we learn a lot more about how the universe works, we discover more of our history and that our government becomes more forthright.

The Cause for Clear

Have you ever been in a situation where you needed an urgent technical explanation? It happened to three blondes.

They were taking a walk in the country when they came upon a line of tracks. The first blonde said, “Those must be deer tracks!” The second blonde said, “No, silly, anyone can tell those are rabbit tracks!” The third blonde said, “No my friends, those are horse tracks!” They were still arguing ten minutes later when a train hit them.

Being blonde myself, I think I can get away with such a joke. But the truth is, people today need education to survive. As our world becomes more complex, they need more and more education. It should be easy to get. In the twenty-first century, information abounds. But still I see that people dont get it.

Could it be that information alone is not enough? In many ways, it is too much. People cant absorb it all. I certainly cant. I know I much prefer content where someone has already synthesized the informationhas done much of the thinking for me. But I know from experience, to write clearly is hard work.

Money In, Books Out

Ive been called to be a writer since I was eight years old. But when high school aptitude tests revealed that Id be a great technical writer, I rolled my eyes. Who wants to write books that nobody reads?

In the whirlwind of the personal computer revolution, I learned otherwise. A good percentage of people do read manuals before they paint themselves into a technical corner. They buy technology to improve their productivity, and they want that improvement as fast as possible. When you help them achieve that goal with clear educational materials, they appreciate it. They become loyal. They buy from you again.

But as I pitched for money to get the books out, too often I encountered that eye-rolling attitude among technology executives. Who wants to pay to develop books that nobody reads?

I quickly learned to identify executives who understood that to serve their customers meant helping them reach their productivity goals. These executives know the power of one-to-many communications, and that the leverage point is the quality of the content. They dont resent paying for it.

But still, no matter where I talk about information design, I encounter mostly eye-rollers. Only sporadically do I encounter someone who knows and uses the secret power of clear content.

Clear Content Is Not On a Page

Tons of books in warehouses, light years of film in vaults, billions of pages on web servers around the globebut where do you find clear content?

In the mind of your audience.

Without human perception and understanding, content simply doesnt exist. Its all just so much paper, celluloid and bits.

Yes, you have content in your head, but how do you recreate it in the minds of others? One on one youve been doing it since you were born. But now youre facing othersa mass of faceless strangersand you need to get the information of a lifetime across.

What Is Clear Content?

Its what you understand instantlywhat engages you, resonates with you, and becomes part of you so quickly that you cant remember not knowing it.

Clear is the lubricant that lets content slip effortlessly into your mind. It removes all resistance. It makes learning a pleasure.

Clear is undervalued because its invisible. When its working, you focus on the content. When its not working, you cant focus at all.

The Cause for Clear

Why be clear?

Clear saves time. It might not seem to save timeyoull spend many hours doing the hard thinking that clarity requires. But those who leave the hard thinking to their audience quickly find themselves without an audience! Clear saves them time, and they demand it.

Clear saves money. Clear conveys more meaning in less media, reduces the need for repetition, translates less expensively to other languages, and quite simply is effective and efficient.

Clear earns loyalty. Customers, clients, readers and listeners all respond to a learning experience they resonate with and enjoy. When you give them what they want, you can bet theyll be back for more.

Clear connects minds. When your content resonates in the minds of others and begins changing their lives for the better, youll gain a new perspective on your role in the worlds evolution.

Clear gives ideas wings. As your ideas spread like oil on water and exert more influence than you ever imagined, youll wonder where their power came from and where they will take you.

Clear creates growth. The connections you make with clear content expand in a viral way, bringing you more contacts, prospects, clients and maybe even fans than you could ever collect one on one. Your community begins to grow, and with it your business, your career, and your spirit.

Clear The Way

As writers and speakers, we share a goal of clear communication, but how often do we recognize clarity as a virtue? Can you think of any celebrities who are famous for being clear? The next time you listen to a speaker, take note of the ways he or she could present ideas more clearly. The next time you hear from your reviewers, take note of how your effectiveness is in direct proportion to your clarity. And if you discover a new secret of clear communication, let me know so I can share it with others. Because like a crystal, to be clear is to approach perfection, and we can all take at least one more step in that direction.

Proof Reading Your Work Can Save You Money in the Long Run

If you know of anyone writing that likes to hear others experiences from authors, please share this and include the byline.

One Isn’t Enough When it Comes to Proof Reading Your Work

Here’s a story of an author who had to learn the hard way that one proof reading isn’t enough.

She had finished her manuscript and was really excited. She knew a local retired English teacher and approached her about her book. She offered to pay for her services but the retired English teacher refused. She expressed interest in proof-reading for the reason of helping a local writer. The author was happy and satisfied about having her work edited for free. After she edited the mistakes, she had her book typesetted. That seemed like the logical step at the time. Then she sent the files to the printers. She order 300 copies.

As she started selling, politely a women told her about some mistakes in the book. She was horrified by this. She put away her fears and reviewed her book. Her happiness had deflated within minutes. There were mistakes and more than a few. This was her fault. She should’ve checked thoroughly before approving her printing order. But there’s also another lesson in this story. Never trust one person’s proof reading. Have relatives and friends that you trust not to steal your work to proof-read. Heck, even hire a professional as well if you feel that your manuscript still needs editing. Always have more than one person proof reading your work. What two people may miss, the third person reviewing may notice.

What happened to her 300 copies? Some went to reviewers, others for free copies. Please keep in mind to warn the reviewer if you do have some bad copies about the grammar and other mistakes. Don’t make the same costly decision she did. One editing, isn’t enough.

Publicity from Thirty-Thousand Feet

We all know that marketing a book is a process. But sometimes the process takes longer than we’d anticipated. That’s why it’s nice every now and again to hop aboard the publicity jet and get a look-see at what you’ve been doing from the thirty-thousand foot level. Why? Well, first off this birds-eye view will revel to you areas you might be overlooking or other options for marketing you hadn’t considered.

To accomplish this bird-eye view you’ll want to get yourself a big white board, or something else big enough to chart your flight plan on. Then, once you’ve gotten that start charting the course you’ve taken so far. Don’t leave a single thing out; it doesn’t matter what it is. What you want to end up with is a serious list of everything you’ve done from the time you held your first proof book in your hands.

One of the things this type of a project will do is give you a new perspective on what you’re doing. It will show you areas that you’ve possibly been spending too much time on or potential holes in your campaign. Sketching out your marketing campaign will also give you a chance to see what’s been leveraging you results and what hasn’t. Keep in mind that some things like bulk sales and national media might take longer than other items so you’ll want to keep putting forth effort towards those long term goals. But let’s say you’ve been spending tons of time doing radio but nothing really seems to be happening in that area. You then look over to your speaking engagement section and realize you haven’t done a lot with that recently. Perhaps it’s time to pull back on radio and start pushing speaking event.

Once you’ve spent a good long time in this birds-eye view mode, start developing a to-do list of items or add to an existing list to help reinvigorate your campaign. One of the many things you’ll learn from doing this thirty-thousand foot perspective is that we often because myopic in our campaigns, focusing too hard in one area and not hard enough in another. Stepping back from your work will allow you the breathing room you need to regroup and reset your goals. Then you can focus in on particular areas or tasks that might need a boost.

It’s been said that a plane flying from Hawaii to Los Angeles is always off by three percent. If left to fly without any adjustments to the course, however slight, the plane would land up in Seattle instead (a difference of almost 1,200 miles!). But through corrections and readjustments the pilot eventually reaches his destination. As you pilot your own campaign, remember: don’t leave your marketing on autopilot. Realign, readjust, and refocus and eventually you too will reach your destination, wherever that might be.
Happy flying!

Here’s A Little-Known Secret To Writing Copy, For Serious Co

Have you ever wondered how your copy sounds to your prospects when they’re reading it?

If you have, here’s a little-known trick to making your copy sound as clear as a bell, and feel as comforting as a warm fireplace in the winter.

The very best way to figure out how your copy sounds to your prospects, is NOT to read it, but to read it out loud. And actually, if you can have someone read it to you, preferably a child, that’s even better.

When I first started writing copy, my 2 sons were in elementary and middle school. They were excited about my new career and were more than happy to read back my copy out loud to me.

Fortunately, my career progressed pretty rapidly, and it wasn’t long before I was writing 13-page long-form sales letters.

Well, needless to say (and understandably so), my kids weren’t as excited about reading their dad’s 17-page “FREE Reports” and long-form sales letters, as they were about reading half-page newspaper display ads.

But luckily, I found a little tool that comes in handy, exactly for situations like this.

And, the price is right — it won’t even cost you a penny!

There’s a software company out there called Read Please (www.readplease.com), located in Ontario, Canada, that’s come up with the perfect tool for writers.

Not surprisingly, the program is also called “Read Please” and here’s what it does: You copy the text from your document and paste it into the Read Please program.

Then, in any one of a number of different voices, the program reads back your text out loud over your computer’s speakers, word-for-word.

You get to choose the voice you like, and you can even slow-down or speed up the pace of the voice.

So what happens is, you have your copy in front of you while the Read Please program is reading your text back to you out loud, and then you start making all the corrections you need to, whenever you hear a mistake. All you do is “pause” the program using your mouse, when you have to do this.

You’ll be able to see exactly where your errors are as you go along, and it’ll be crystal clear whether or not your copy is flowing smoothly, and whether or not you’re communicating clearly and saying what you need to.

Using this tool makes your copy much more effective.

If you want, there’s even an upgraded version of the software you can buy for a few bucks, that has some nice bells and whistles added.

Consistently using Read Please helps me discover loads of errors I never would have ferreted out on my own — at least not without a 12-year old reading the piece back to me.

Remember, the number one error you’ll find yourself making, is not speaking clearly enough to your prospects. Remember, your prospect isn’t “inside” your head — they really don’t understand what you’re trying to sell them. So be crystal clear in what you’re saying — no one ever lost a sale for speaking too clearly!

He… Him… Lord!

When the sun is low
And you feel tired
Just forget about the crow
And you will feel fired

When dreams are fading
And you feel you’re not winning
Just raise your chin
And soon you’ll win

But when you do start feeling fired
And you do start to win
Just don’t forget about the Lord
And remember to always turn to him

Because if you only let him run your life
You will never fuss
Because in your heat, gone will be the knife
And from then on he’ll carry your cross

Is Your Favorite Position # 1?

10 FREE resources that will help put your eBook on the best seller’s list. They worked for me!
Is Your Favorite Position On Top?

Put Your eBook on the Best Seller’s List for FREE

By Cathi Stevenson

My eBook made the best sellers’ list on the publisher’s web site within a few months of its release and I invested very little money getting it to this position. The internet is full of free resources that eBook authors can use to promote themselves and increase sales. The most effective FREE marketing tools I have found are:

1. Start a newsletter. This can be accomplished for free at http://www.topica.com. Give something away to anyone who signs up; it can be sample chapters of your book, recipes, a collection of URLs that may interest your readers, etc. I give away eBook cover templates. Once you’ve created your format and have the first issue ready to send, you’ll need to visit all the free listing sites you can find for eZines and get yours listed.

2. List your eBook on every free eBook listing site you can find. Every month I list a few different sites authors can submit to in my own eZine, you can read the issues online at: http://www.authorscafe.com.

3. Book Cover Graphic. Make sure you have an effective eBook cover graphic. It doesn’t have to be fancy (black and white is fine if it is done properly), but it should be easy to read and bring attention to your book. Submit that graphic everywhere you can when promoting your book. You can make it in Microsoft Word, or download a free graphics’ program like PaintShopPro (30 day free trial of fully functional program available at: http://www.jasc.com). If you’re going to put a graphic on your book’s cover, make sure you have permission to use it commercially.

4. Trade ads. Once your eZine is up and running you can trade ads with other eZine owners.

5. Write articles. “Brand yourself” by giving away articles you’ve written. Go to any search engine and type in “free eZine content” or “free articles” and search through the results until you find ones where you can submit your genre of article. Make absolutely certain you retain all copyrights to your material.

6. Signature line. Almost every eMail program allows you to include a signature line, even free ones like Yahoo!. Make sure you have the name of your book and URL for your eZine on all your outgoing mail. Avoid being too wordy, or including the graphic here though, so people receiving eMail from you don’t feel like they’re getting a promo sheet.

7. Give away sample chapters of your book from your site. Make a mini version of your eBook, or offer a few chapters in PDF (you can convert a document to PDF for free at: http:.//www.adobe.com)

8. Offer your book as a “prize”. Several popular eZines offer promotional prizes each month and are always grateful to accept donations. You can also do this in your own eZine or off your web site.

9. Look professional. Make sure your web site is not full of other people’s pop up ads, or has a long URL that shouts “I’m a freebie”. You can register a .com for less than $10 at http://www.registerfly.com or http://www.godaddy.com. You can find web space for as little as $1.50 per month at: http://www.2mhost.com or visit http://www.hostpile.com and compare a variety of web hosting services.

10. Answer your eMail. Most people have experienced the notorious “after sale snub” at one time or another, and it leaves a bad impression. If someone has purchased your book and writes you, always politely acknowledge the eMail. Not only is it good PR, it might result in a sale for your next eBook.

Ebook Farming- A Definitive Guide to Your Ebook Creation (Eb

Why would you want to buy a book on writing Ebooks? There seem to be a multitude of freebies on this topic as well as tons of free content available on the web. Well I have found an ebook on this topic, that you definitely want to study and keep. It will become a resourceful referrence tool, that you will want to refer back to on a regular basis. What makes this one so special?

Upon first considering reviewing Dennis Gaskill’s “Ebook Farming, How to Grow Money Selling your Words and Ideas” I was skeptical. I thought, this topic is so prolific on the web, why would I want invest money in it. I soon discovered that this wasn’t just an average run of the mill, “How to Get Rich Quickly” ebook.

When I read on his sales page that the book was “”Over 46,000 words! I thought, “wow” he really put his whole heart and soul into this ebook.
This is no cheesy little report pretending to be an eBook – there is real substance here. ” I thought, “oh great, I’ll probably have a tough time just reading the whole thing!” Boy, was I wrong!

You will be suprised to learn that Dennis put around 500 hours of research into writing this ebook. An average guy, like you or I, he discovered how to achieve incredible results. He has also created a book, “Web Site Design Made Easy” This book has been printed and is used as college text material around the United States. This all happened to a guy, like you and I, who started out just wanting to make some extra money online. So why is it so unique, you might say?

It covers every aspect of epublishing that you might stumble across. The ebook contains approximately 2000 links to :

research sites,
government sites,
writing sites,
reference sites,
search engine sites,
plus
sites where you can get your ebook listed, reviewed, and set yourself up with merchant credit card accounts cheaply and easily.
It also gives some of the best software freeware site links.
Now if that isn’t enough to spark your interest, his chapter titled
“My Success Philosophy” is worth the price of the book, all by itself.

I have applied his philosophy to my life in the past few months, and you would not believe what I have accomplished. Not just profit in terms of money, but also desparately needed resources, that have come my way as a result of applying these principles to my life.

A subscriber from my list emailed me with a question. Being a beginner, I wasn’t real confident of the question, I forwarded it to Dennis and his answer was truly awesome.
You can read about this experience in a free report I have written:

How to Make Sales by Going the Extra Mile
Get it for Free by sending a blank email to:
extram@you2cansellonline.com

Taking a subject that could be long and boring, Dennis has broken it down into pleasant to read, easily digestable, workable steps. He adds a sense of humor, that brings a smile to your face as you read. He has left no stone unturned, in digging up the resources you need to complete your own information product.

Finding the whole ebook production process a little bit overwhelming myself, I appreciated the way Dennis broke it down in encouraging doable segments. I was skeptical that his book would be any different than others I have scoured over on this subject. But I have to admit, he really put his whole heart and soul into writing this ebook. He truly has the intent of helping out the beginning author with his struggles and doubts.

The only thing that could be improved on, in my opinion, is that I found a few outdated links. Upon answering a few emails, I was told he is presently working on an update. I anxiously look forward to seeing what wonderful gems he adds to his upgrade.

You can see the table of contents to his book, at his site:
http://you2cansellonline.com/boogie

You can also find hotlinks there that give you excerpts from certain chapters, to give you a taste of his writing style. After having looked at and reviewing several ebooks on this subject, I give “Ebook Farming, How to Grow Money Selling your Words and Ideas” by Dennis Gaskill a big thumbs up.

This ebook is definitely a resource you will want to bookmark on your desktop and refer back to on a regular basis. It is available in both pdf and exe format.

Starting a Freelance Writing Career (or Thoughts About Takin

Nike’s ad has taken on new meaning for me of late; “Just do it!” runs through my mind like a mantra. Although my dreams have nothing to do with athletic shoes and little to do with athletics (unless you count the long list of ideas I have developed which revolve around my sons and their activities), I have spent a long time avoiding the one thing I’ve always wanted to do – write.

Writing has actually been a part of my work life for a very long time. I’ve written and edited in the business world. I’ve taught writing to high school students. I’ve written countless lesson plans, activities, etc. I have never tried to get any of my work published, until now.

Making the decision to write for a living was actually one of the most difficult obstacles I needed to overcome. (“Overcome” is probably too strong. I am still scared to death that I won’t be able to pay my mortgage.) I never doubted my ability to write, but I did doubt my ability to write for a living. My former employer helped me make the decision by firing me. (They actually called it a reduction in force, or RIF for short.) After avoiding the application process for weeks, then staring at an online application for close to an hour, I finally had to come to terms with myself and my goals for the future.

While I love teaching, I am tired of the politics that accompany teaching. I can’t face it any more. I need to pay my bills and be financially responsible, but part of raising my children involves being a role model. I don’t want them to be afraid to take a risk that could help them realize their dreams because they watched their mother play it safe.

Having said that, I must admit that my new found bravery faltered when I wrote two checks totaling $1100.00 for two children to play travel soccer next year. Nevertheless, I developed a game face and hid my fears from everyone. I even fooled myself for a while. As the school year ended, my colleagues began asking me about my plans for the fall. I answered – with confidence that I only partially felt – that I planned to write. After repeating this statement to the tenth person, I began to feel somewhat guilty. After all, I was making it sound as if it were a done deal, when I really had barely started. I had a bunch of “how to” articles stacked in my home office that were conflicting and sometimes confusing. I had not even read some of the articles yet.

Many of my well wishers countered with questions that unintentionally poked holes in my game face. “Write what?” they asked. “For whom?” they asked. The answers to their questions involved explaining the vast quantities of research through which I had only recently begun to sift. I felt my courage failing because I could not adequately explain the process I was only beginning to understand myself. That insidious self-doubt began to erode my courage.

But I persevered. As I plodded through articles about query letters, marketing skills, and copyright I began to see opportunity in the mountains of material.

That opportunity belongs to the writer who can stick it out. As I delve into some of the markets listed online and read about their requirements, I now think: “I can do that!” A torrent of ideas spouts out of me as I work, as I sleep, as I drive car pool. I have several pieces started, a myriad of sticky notes hanging from shelves in my office, and a legal pad with several pages of notes. My game face is back and for the first time it is supported with real confidence.

Looking back on the those first weeks and months, I realize what I have accomplished. I have taken the first step – I made the decision to write for a living. I have learned that writing query letters is the standard and expected practice for pitching ideas to potential markets. I have learned what information should be included in a query letter. I have learned that Writer’s Market is the best place to find those markets.

I am now taking the next step: I’m looking for appropriate markets and writing query letters to pitch my ideas. We’ll see…
